I think I can honestly say that Harold and Kumar is our generations Cheech and Chong. Albeit, the Harold and Kumar films aren’t as great as the Cheech and Chong films but I think you get the point. A series of stoner films that everyone can enjoy, and by everyone I, of course, mean any one with tough enough skin to sit through a comedy that is constantly poking fun at your racial stereotypes. However, the racial stereotypes that made the first two films somewhat popular takes a backseat to make way for naked lesbian nuns, horny old priests chasing little boys and claymation nudity. The racial commentary is still there but it isn't in your face like it was in the previous film.
A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas takes place two years after the events of the second film. Harold Lee (John Cho) is a successful businessman who has a beautiful wife (Paula Garces), beautiful, spacious home, and an awesome (best?) friend. And no, I’m not talking about Kumar. Kumar Patel (Kal Penn) has refused to grow up. He smokes weed all day and has little regard for his cleanliness, career, and his relationships. Because of this, the happy relationship that he and Harold once shared has diminished as well as his sexual relationship with Vanessa, played by Denneel Ackles. Kumar also has a new friend, Adrian, played by Amir Blumenfeld of Jake and Amir fame (but I would use fame loosely). Both men are not without there problems; Harold has his father-in-law visiting, a menacing-looking, bad-ass Danny Trejo who puts Christmas as his top priority, and Kumar just found out his ex-girlfriend is pregnant but drives her away for his inattentiveness. He then decides to take responsibility for himself.
Kumar really then takes initiative when a mysterious package winds up at his front door marked for Harold and decides to deliver his mail. That’s when the high-jinks begin.
I didn’t really like the second film as much as I liked the first, but I can honestly say that’s not the case here. This film, while still not better than their trip to White Castle, is a much better sequel and is freakin’ hilarious. The laughs were non-stop from the first frame to the very last. Todd Strauss-Schulson really did a good job with telling the audience what they are in for the first few minutes of the film. It’s like he was saying, “if you take our 3D seriously, you must be high.”
Almost everyone does a great job, comic-wise, especially NPH who steals the show with his crazy antics. Also, Danny Trejo is just fun to look at with his loud Christmas sweaters. He’s still intimidating though, so slow your role. Thomas Lennon delivers with what he’s given with and Amir Blumenfeld is ok, but it can be hard to transition from internet shows to full-length feature films.
Yes, I did see this movie in 3D and I would have to recommend this to you in the dying format. It’s not the modern 3D that you’re used to, it’s the popcorn flick, 80's style 3D where everything is being thrown at you including hot, jizzy maple syrup, a claymation penis, ping-pong balls and marijuana smoke. Lots and lots and lots of marijuana smoke. It doesn’t have a great story and the jokes may run stale with certain people but it’s all about the experience with this one. If you must, see it in 3D or don’t bother unless you are a huge fan of the series.
Since there isn’t a half abiding dude rating, I would have to round up and give this a rating of 4. Sounds a bit high for film like this but I honestly got my money's worth. Each abiding dude goes as follows: the 3D was great, the film is hilarious, the characters are enjoyable to watch and have screen presence and finally, Neil Patrick Harris who steals the show the moment his mug graces the screen.
Oh and please, don't watch this film by yourself. Take a group of friends. It would be more enjoyable that way.
