Monday, November 7, 2011 at 7:12AM DiCaprio, Penn May Star In 'The Revenant' by Inarritu
So it seems that director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu wants to add a star-leading cast and has chosen very well. His next film is based on the novel 'The Revenant' by Michael Punke and Inarritu wants to cast Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn as his two lead male actors. A most welcome combination of star and acting power.
Now who would deny Inarritu, especially after Biutiful? I honest and personally believe it's the directors greatest film, as well as the most fascinating performance from star Javier Bardem since No Country for Old Men.
Inarritu has worked with Sean Penn before in 21 Grams and so maybe that past might make that casting choice more probable. As for DiCaprio, coming off a possible Oscar-worthy buzz on J. Edgar, he might want to follow up with a "just as good if not better" role in The Revenant.
"In the Mark L. Smith-scripted drama, DiCaprio is being courted to play 1820s frontiersman Hugh Glass, who hires on to a fur trapping expedition and is so badly mauled by a bear that he’s unable to be transported back from the wilderness. He hires two men to stay behind. Expecting him to die, they rob and abandon him instead, leaving him helpless. When he recovers, he is hellbent on revenge. Inarritu wants Penn to play one of the men who left him for dead."
The film is being distributed by Fox Searchlight and may start shooting next fall. Here's to hopefully seeing this casting choice interact on screen.
Leonardo DiCaprio will be seen in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained and Sean Penn is current filming Gangster Squad.
