'X-Men: First Class' Sequel Gets a (Dangerously Mediocre) Writer

One thing that many don't seem to realize is that Batman Begins wasn't a particularly strong financial success.  It had the lowest opening of any of of the modern Batman films, and still grossed less than Tim Burton's 1989 blockbuster, even before you make the appropriate changes for inflation.  What made it so successful was the high critical praise it got, showing that the franchise still had plenty of life left in it, paving the way for the cultural phenomenon that was The Dark Knight.  Why do I bring this up?  Because it seems to be very much like what might be shaping up for X-Men: First Class.

First Class had the lowest opening of any X-Men film so far, and was only able to make a profit by doing well in foreign markets.  And yet, it's considered by most to be the best film in the series so far, and shows a huge amount of potential for where it can for future films in the series.  Now, Fox has decided to respond to this by hiring screenwriter Simon Kinberg to pen the script, according to SuperHeroHype. On the plus side, he wrote the immensly entertaing Sherlock Holmes.  On the negative side, he also wrote X-Men: The Last Stand, and Jumper.  The first of which damaged the reputability of the X-Men franchise, and a Hayden Christensen flick that makes the Star Wars prequels look amazing by comparison.  It was actually X-Men: The Last Stand's poor script quality that made First Class director Matthew Vaughn walk away from that project, so one must wonder what role (if any) he had in the decision to choose the writer for this one.  Here's hoping that Kinberg is able to channel the right elements of his ability to produce a script that can live up to the franchise's potential.
