Robocop, much like Total Recall was one of those corny action classics that everyone loved back in the day, but was honestly in major need of a facelift for a second go around. Elite Squad director Jose Padilha was brought in by the studio to give the Robocop franchise its fresh start.
"I have my take on it," he said. "And I can tell you this: In the first 'Robocop' when Alex Murphy is shot, gunned down, then you see some hospitals and stuff and then you cut to him as Robocop. My movie is between those two cuts. How do you make Robocop? How do you slowly bring a guy to be a robot? How do you actually take humanity out of someone and how to you program a brain, so to speak, and how doest that affect an individual."
He was also asked whether he would consider casting his lead actor, Wagner Moura, from Elite Squad as Robocop. An idea Padilha quickly dismissed.
"We need an American Robocop," he said. "Robocop is an American guy, his name is Alex Murphy."
A couple months back the director admitted Michael Fassbender would be his ideal choice for the role, though it seems highly unlikely Fassbender would be interested. It makes me wonder who they will cast as Alex Murphy/Robocop when the time comes. Will it be an action star or an unknown?
I'm super psyched for a Robocop reboot, which is scheduled to hit theaters in 2013.
