Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 2:08PM Darren Aronofsky Wants Michael Fassbender for 'Noah'

It's always wonderful to see a decidedly non-traditional director gain clout in Hollywood, as it turns what would normally be obscure passion projects into massive undertakings. A prime example of this is Darren Aronofsky, director of unusual fair like Pi, The Fountain, and Black Swan, who has been given the greenlight to make a 130 million dollar adaptation of the Biblical story of Noah's Ark. The actor who was previously slated to play Noah, Christian Bale, has bowed out of the production and Variety reports that Michael Fassbender is now being sought out.
Fassbender is, without a doubt, showing himself to be the biggest rising star of the year, making an impact with both blockbusters like X-men: First Class, and more artsy stuff like Shame. Better yet, he seems to know how to handle his newfound fame and pick his films well, as his current future projects are helmed by Ridley Scott and Steven Soderberg. We've all seen big up and coming actors whose careers were hurt by bad choices, and he seems to be avoiding that.
Aronofsky seems to have been having trouble even picking what film to do to follow up on Black Swan, having been attached and dropped out of both The Wolverine and the Robocop remake. I was disappointed about his departure from both of those, but hearing about this project is beginning to make up for it. I loved The Fountain, not just for its incredibly imagery but for how it dealt with universal human desires and obsessions in ways that transcended traditional storytelling. To see him turn his thematic eye to a story as well-known and epic as Noah is something I can't wait to see him wrestle with.
