Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 11:20AM Spielberg Chats About 'Indiana Jones 5'

In a recent interview with NY Mag, Steven Spielberg revealed some minor tidbits pertaining to the Indiana Jones franchise. Spielberg stated that he and George Lucas have indeed been working on another Indiana Jones sequel (part 5), but only in terms of a general idea for the new film.
"I told [Spielberg] about the story, but I really haven't found the MacGuffin yet," he said. "I mean, I know what it's about, but I just have to find a MacGuffin that fits into the arena we're working in."
The term, a MacGuffin is a screenwriting narrative element that drives the story forward. Their past "MacGuffins" have resulted in concepts ranging from the brilliant (Raiders of the Lost Ark) to the abysmal (Crystal Skull), so there is plenty of room in between for something great.
After the disaster that was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Spielberg and Lucas had better come up with a uber-fantastic idea for their next installment or else risk joining James L. Brooks in the “yesterday’s news” category. Here’s my suggestion for number 5; why not “Indiana Jones and the Fountain of Youth”?
The “MacGuffin” is obvious and the tongue-in-cheek might be endearing to fans of the franchise, especially since it’s no secret that Indy, a.k.a. Harrison Ford, has been receiving regular mailings from the folks at AARP for quite some time.
Messrs. Spielberg and Lucas; yes, you can use my title and yes, I would be happy to co-write too.
