Friday, December 16, 2011 at 8:20PM Fearless Forecast: 'Holmes' and 'Hunt' Fight For #1 Spot

Who will win? The smart, smug Ethan Hunt or the smart, smug Sherlock Holmes? Well, since MI:GP is a limited release with about 700 theaters, 400 main circuit and 300 IMAX, Holmes will win hands down. Also in the mix, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and the wide release of Young Adult. But who will take second place? Will it be the rodents, spys, or the alcoholic, teen writer?
Sherlock Holmes 2, has a lot to live up to. When the first film was released in 2009, it earned an impressive $62 million, preceding Avatar. But can the sequel live up to the expectations Warner is hoping for? Maybe.

To any fan of this next series, sorry for what I'm about to say. Alvin and Chipmunks is a shit series but it will earn a large amount because our kids are stupid. Yeah, I said your kids are stupid.
Chipwrecked? More like Shit-wrecked
Like I said before, MI:GP has a limited release but that won't stop the film to earn a substantial amount of money. I think it's a great move to release the film a week early in a limited release to gain a headstart on competition, especially from Speilberg. Don't forget, The Dark Knight Rises prologue is premiering in front of select IMAX theaters so its gross will benefit from that.

New Year's Eve can't and won't make up for the amount it earned last week. It was embarresing, however, I think Holmes can make up for both films budget. I expect for the film to gross slightly less than last week. Finally, Young Adult will round out the top five beating out The Sitter.

Here are the numbers:
1. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows $56.3 M
2. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked $32 M
3. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol $24 M
4. New Year's Eve $13 M
5. Young Adult $8 M
