Monday, December 19, 2011 at 6:18PM Second 'Dark Knight Rises' Trailer Officially Released Online
Christopher Nolan and company have really been spoiling us for the last month or so. Before, we had to rely on cell phone set footage and (usually fake) leaked plot details. Now, from everything we've seen, I feel like this movie is getting released next week. The previous advertisement efforts hyped me up, but I have to be honest and admit that this trailer is huge a swoop in the other direction. In fact, I didn't think it was possible for something to kill my excitement for this movie the way the new trailer does.
Just kidding! It's every bit as awesome as we all hoped it would be! Watch for yourself and see the greatness:
There's probably about thirty different things I'd like to talk about in this trailer, but for now I think I'll just limit it to four.
One great thing about this trilogy Nolan has created is how visually distinct each film has been. In Batman Begins, Gotham (shot mostly on a sound stage) was dark, foreboding and claustrophobic. To take what you'd see at face value, you'd think that the city was made of nothing but alleyways. Gotham in The Dark Knight was much more grounded and real. We saw more city-wide shots and we saw the city in the daytime more often, which worked thematically with how Batman was cleaning the city up. Now, I'm pretty sure we've seen more visual diversity in this trailer than we have in the last two films combined. We get the colorful football game. We get the elegant masquerade ball. We get to see Batman, fighting for the first time in the daylight, in the snow-covered streets. It's like Batman is reviving Gotham City more and more with each movie, and it goes a long way for making these three movies feel like a complete trilogy.
Any doubts I had about Anne Hathaway playing a good Catwoman have been quashed. In three sentences she's proven she can be sexy, menacing and even sympathetic all at once. I wonder how much this film will say about the current economic conditions and class tensions.
From what we see of the bearded Bruce and Alfred inside of Bane's Inception-like dungeon, this'll take place over a much longer period than The Dark Knight. How will that play out? Will Wayne get kidnapped before or after Bane's massive assault on the city? Is this before or after Gordon is put in the hospital? We've got plenty of pieces, but no way to connect them.
"When Gotham is in ashes, you have my permission to die." It's a great line, not just because it sounds cool, but because of what it tells us about Bane. He's confident, he's controlling, and he thinks he has both Gotham and Batman in the palm of his hand. After seeing what he did to that football field, I'm inclined to agree with him.
The Dark Knight Rises is set for release in July 2012.

I loved Nolan's first two Batman movies, but this trailer doesn't convince me at all. So far I don't like this Bane version and I couldn't care less about Catwoman. The prison escape somehow reminds me too much of Arkham City, too. I'll watch the movie because of the first two, but right now I'm not excited about it in any way.
I think it's a great trailer. Possibly underwhelming in terms of scale compared to a lot of the overblown CGI rubbish we see these days - where the trailer is usually better than the film - but some DELCIOUS dialogue in there already and lots of clues as to what happens without giving the game away. What more could you want?
Plus, love how Bane sounds from that snippet. (Granted, I haven't seen the 'mumbling' prologue yet).
