Warner Bros. Pictures must be smitten with Seth Grahame-Smith (Dark Shadows) as they have purchased the rights to his yet-to-be-published novel, Unholy Night. According to reports in Deadline, Warner Bros. acquired the rights for the tidy sum of $2 million.
In addition, Grahame-Smith has also been hired to write the screenplay and along with production partner David Katzenberg, will produce the film in association with David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of Heydey Films.
From the author who brought you the mash-ups of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Unholy Night is another ‘re-telling”, this time involving the three wise men of biblical fame. The three are portrayed as thieves, led by the murderous Balthazar, who engage in a daring escape from Herod’s prison only to stumble upon a nondescript manger and its holy newborn occupant.
Unholy Night, which is scheduled to hit store shelves next April, apparently is expected to be a huge hit for Grahame-Smith. After all, who amongst us hasn’t clamored for a new version of the holiest of holy books? Gideon and King James be damned! The world wants to read their favorite characters re-booted in a darker landscape than what they must have had to live through, one that includes a flight from Egypt involving swordfights, magical creatures and John the Baptist. Don’t be too surprised if “The Baptist” moonlights as a mythical monster-killer.
