I wonder how director Paul Verhoeven feels seeing all of his movies headed to remake heaven. Is he cashing in? Vulture reports that Starship Troopers is the latest former Verhoeven flick, joining Total Recall and Robocop, in line for a new look. After a million painfully bad sequels, they're just now coming up with this?
Starship Troopers came out in 1997, not all that long ago, but there's no question the story would benefit from a facelift and a little less mega toothed Jake Busey and Casper Van Dien. I would approve of seeing NPH return for the mad scientist role again in the reboot though.
The same producer of the new Total Recall, Neal Moritz (The Fast and Furious) will produce this remake as well. Ashley Edward Miller and Zach Stentz (X-Men: First Class, Thor) have signed on to write the next script.
Much like when I learned of the Total Recall and Robocop remakes, I'm beyond jazzed to see Starship Troopers get a second chance. Granted, I loved all three of these original films, but Verhoeven's movies were all so campy and full of bad dialogue. I'll never forget those classics (I own them all), though I'm really optimistic about the remakes. They should at least possess an improved combination of violence and drama than their predecessors.
So I'm psyched for a new Starship Troopers. Who's with me?
