To 3D or Not to 3D
Looks like the sequel to the 2009 Star Trek reboot will go the 2D to post-conversion 3D route, according to director J.J. Abrams. What this means is, like many films before it Star Trek 2 will be shot in 2D and converted to 3D after. But that's not all, some of the film may be shot in an IMAX format as well, similar to Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol and The Dark Knight Rises.
Abrams confirmed all of this when asked about it by MTV.
"We're shooting on film, 2D, and then we'll do a good high-end conversion like the Harry Potter movie and all that," Abrams said. "Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right because if you rush it, it never looks good."
Abrams also mentioned a fondness for IMAX films.
"IMAX is my favorite format; I'm a huge fan," he said.
So it looks like el director has his mind made up for how the starship Enterprise and its crew will be filmed in Star Trek 2. I trust Abrams judgement, especially considering he churned out a masterpiece with the first film of the new look Star Trek franchise. While this is indeed exciting news for the sequel, I'll be far more jazzed to learn what the premise of follow up will be.
Star Trek 2 is currently in the pre-production phase and won't be released in theaters until May 12, 2013.
