Friday, December 23, 2011 at 7:14AM Obnoxiously 3D? No Place In Whedon's 'The Avengers'

With the glut of 3D movies pilferating the pockets of moviegoers, studios still haven't changed their tune on the poor use of post-conversion 2D to 3D. With that, Walt Disney Pictures has announced that The Avengers will be released in their Digital Disney 3D. Joss Whedon, the film's director, said the film won't be "obnoxiously 3D."
Speaking exclusively to JoBlo, Whedon said on the use of 3D:
“There’s no, ‘Oh look, we’re going to spend 20 minutes going through this tunnel because it’s in 3D!’ And no one is pointing at the screen the entire time. But it’s an action movie. Things tend to hurtle toward the screen anyway.” … “I’m not a big fan of extreme long lens, talky movies – I like to see the space I’m in and relate to it, so 3D kinda fits my aesthetic anyway. And the technology has advanced so far in the past couple years.”
Saying that the aesthetical use of the technology complements his film style:
"Yeah, it's fun!...I'm not a big fan of extreme long lens, talky movies - I like to see the space I'm in and relate to it, so 3D kinda fits my aesthetic anyway. And the technology has advanced so far in the past couple years."
When done well, we'd expect something along the lines that Avatar has set or that of Cameron's upcoming reissue of Titanic. (Side note: I expect fun banter and referential cues accompanied by film space. Just to clarify the "talky movies" intention.)
What's also of interest is that other Marvel superheor action films weren't shot in 3D (Thor and Captain America), that they were eventually post-converted. The difference here is that Whedon test shot the pst-credit sequence in Thor with 3D camera rigs and decided against shooting in 3D because of the extra equipment. Keeping in mind the need for the studio, Whedon has been very aware of his film process to easily accomodate 3D conversion.
At least that's as much credit I'm willing to give with this whole "3D post-conversion" situation, even though I'm not a fan or at least haven't been proven wrong by non-3D productions.
