Herman Cain Quotes 'Pokemon' in Presidential Race Speech

It is not very often that movie blogs can discuss politics.  Why would we want to?  It is a tricky subject best avoided.  However, this is just a political topic that just can not be avoided. 

After several allegations of sexual harassment, affairs, and other debauchery, Herman Cain decided to drop out of the 2012 Presidential Race.  During his debate speeches and also in his book, Cain quoted something that sounded very familiar and only credited it to a "poet".  More accurately, the quote was actually lyrics from 'The Power of One' by Donna Summer which was a popular track in Pokemon: The Movie 2000.

Pokemon, or Pocket Monsters, is a highly popular Japanese anime for children that has also been very successful in America for over a decade.  Derived from the video games, the animated Pokemon series has over 700 episodes. Pokemon: The Movie 2000 is the second feature length film out of fourteen.  It was released in Japan in 1999.

GQ Magazine posted an interview with Cain where he says he did not know the lyrics were from a Pokemon movie:

Chris Heath: Completely different subject.  I'm interested in this Donna Summer song that you quoted in the debates and you quoted in your book.

Herman Cain: I heard the song in a collage that NBC put together following the 2000 Olympics.  And as it turns out, the song comes from the Pokémon movie, and I didn't know that.

Chris Heath: It's the theme of the movie.

Herman Cain: That's what I've been told.  And so I fell in love with this song, fell in love with how she sang the song, and fell in love with the words.  Committed it to memory.

Growing up with Pokemon and still admitting I am a huge fan, this is just interesting news that the boundaries of film, animated or live action, can be blurred and used as inspiration for those who do not even know the source material.
