Benicio Del Toro Backs Out of 'Star Trek 2'

It had been reported over the past week or so that Benicio Del Toro was in negotiations to appear as the unnamed villain in the sequel to 2009's Star Trek prequel/reboot.  Rumors began to surface that he was cast as legendary villain and internet meme Khan, but they were seemingly shot down by J.J. Abrams.  Later leaked reports insisted that Khan still was the villain, suggesting that Abrams was just lying to surprise the fans. Whether Khan is the villain or not, however, we now know that Del Toro won't be playing him.

Vulture reports that last Wednesday Del Toro stepped down from the role after not being offered enough money.  Considering that his last big star vehicle was The Wolfman, I don't think he can afford to be so picky.  I may have liked it, but I'm pretty sure that only makes five or six of us who do.  Whether or not he was going to play Khan, however, it's disappointment to see him leave.  He would have been the most experienced member of the cast, and would have probably given a great performance.

This also means that Abrams has to scramble to find a suitable actor for the villain before filming starts in two months.  I remember Javier Bardem was rumored a couple of years back to be playing Khan, and I think that he'd be a great choice for the part.
