Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 2:16PM Scorcese Has 'Silence' Planned in the Near Future
Martin Scorcese's name may be synonymous with gangster flicks after producing classics like Goodfellas and The Departed, but he's never been afraid of stepping out of his box. His recent child-friendly film Hugo is evidence of that, and with a 94% percent on Rotten Tomatoes, it's evidence that he can do it well. From what he says, Scorcese has no immediate plans to return to the mob. Instead, he's moving forward on an adaptation of Silence, a 1966 Japanese novel about a group of persecuted Catholic missionaries in 17th century Japan.
Silence is a project that Scorcese has wanting to make for some time, originally planning to film it in 2008 before progress stalled and he devoted his time to Hugo. Now, during a radio interview hosted by Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode, he says, "I’m hoping to do Endo’s book next, Silence… Not hoping, we’re literally pulling all the elements together at this point."
The book, from author Shusaku Endo, deals with faith, despair, and feelings of abandonment by God. While he currently identifies as an agnostic, he's certainly no stranger to Roman Catholicism, having strongly considered entering the priesthood in his youth. I'm guessing that was before he developed a cocaine addiction and made Taxi Driver.
Spirituality isn't an unfamiliar subject in Scorcese's films. Both his controversial 1988 film The Last Temptation of Christ and Kundun, a 1997 biopic of the 14th Dalai Lama steeped him deeper in religion then most filmmakers ever come close to getting. This is something I've been hoping would come to fruition for some time, and it's great to see that after hitting a wider range of commercial success again with his most recent films, he hasn't forgotten his more personal projects.

Good to know. It's been stated before that mexican actor Gael García Bernal will be having a role as one of the missionaries. Let's hope he makes a good job showing our country has fine actors who can level up to working with someone as big as him.
By the way, what's with the typographical error there? (ScorSese).
Cheers!
