Amid the news that Javier Bardem has been offered the role of Roland Deschain in The Dark Tower movies, another popular Stephen King novel is making its way to the big screen. King's post-apocalyptic story "The Stand" is currently being developed for a movie adaptation by Warner Bros. and CBS, according to Heat Vision.
The Stand was previously released as a TV mini-series in back 1994 and starred Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald and Rob Lowe.

The book followed four groups of survivors making the journey across the country in the wake of a viral outbreak that kills the majority of the population. Roy Lee will produce the project, though no writer or director have signed on thus far.
Since the original story was broken up into three parts, it's speculated that The Stand will be released as a trilogy as opposed to just a single movie. We shouldn't be surprised since trilogies have been a long standing trend in the movie biz, more so as of late.
The Stand mini-series was good, a little on the cheesy side, but also way ahead of it's time. Many movie goers, including myself seem to love the genre of post-apocalyptic action/horror films and this story fits that mold. I'm psyched to see how the movie evolves as Warner Bros. and company develop the project further.
If anything it should give me ample time to either read the book or re-watch the mini-series in preparation for the new movie.

The miniseries covered the story pretty well it just would have been nice if it had more of a visual style instead of the "made for tv" look. Being in jr. high and high school during the time of the original book's publishing it seemed on any day you could look around any classroom and under at least one desk was a copy of that book. So it's a seminal horror/sci fi novel to cover. I wonder if some elements need updating, and I'm sure they'll do that as what was effective in '79 may not have as much impact now. Plus there's also the fact that they already made a miniseries off of it, long thought to be the ONLY way it could be covered in a motion-picture form. I'm glad they're taking another stab at it and I hope it turns out to be as epic a sci-fi/horror movie as the original novel was.
I find the timing of this to be very convenient, with The Dark Tower being worked on. Both The Stand and The Dark Tower have a character in common, but it's not revealed until much later in The Dark Tower series. If they made the two overlap with, say, the same actor, it might cause me to geek out.
