Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 4:02AM First Trailer for 'Apollo 18'

Today, Dimension Films released the first trailer for their Paranormal-Activity-in-Space flick Apollo 18. The found footage sci-fi horror film, directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego and produced by Timur Bekmambetov, follows "the real mission to space in the 1970′s that was canceled by NASA" and is the "Reason We’ve Never Gone Back To The Moon".
In full disclosure, it's going to be VERY hard for me to judge this film impartially because I wrote a script last year in college that was virtually the same concept (found footage film about astronauts encountering aliens), the only difference being mine was set in the near future not the '70s. And now, between this film and 2012's Dark Moon, my script will never see the light of day. See kids, it doesn't always pay off to stay in school (I'm only kidding... kind of). All that said, this film's first trailer doesn't look half bad.
The plot itself is pretty straightforward (astronauts meet aliens, bad things happen), it's got some scares, and creepy atmosphere but, with really only two cast members, the fate of the film lies in their performances. I'm also worried about how the whole retro, super-8 camera vibe will play out over the course two hours. I can, however, say that I do want to see more from this film now.
Oh and here's a fun fact: while NASA denies a secret Apollo 18 mission ever existed, Bob Weinstein decided to come aboard and finance the film under his Dimension arm after Bekmambetov showed him footage that was supposedly shot by the real Apollo 18 crew. Eeire...
