Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 11:37AM Matt Damon Says 'Liberace' Biopic Coming in 2012
Apparently a planned Liberace biopic has been on the backburner since 2008, with Matt Damon and Michael Douglas slated to star in the Steven Soderbergh directed project. Cinemablend.com reports that Damon says the plan is to start shooting in 2012, and that he'll try to convince the veteran director to continue making films on the set of Liberace.
I guess Soderbergh has hinted at retiring from the movie business, so Damon wants the pair to make more movies together before that day comes.
"It's his life to do with what he wants. So in the meantime, I'm doing as movies with him as I can. I've defintely got him on the hook for one more," Damon said.
Damon and Soderbergh have worked together many times in the past on movies like the Ocean's Eleven series, The Informant!, and are currently filming the sci-fi flick Contagion. Douglas paired with Soderbergh on the powerful drama Traffic in 2000.
Douglas will star as the legendary Liberace in the upcoming biopic, while Damon will co-star as Scott Thorson the pianist's long time friend and companion. Other than that, very little is known about the project.
I can't say I'm dying to see a movie about the life of Liberace, but I do like Damon and Soderbergh and will likely see it as a result.

The "Oceans" movies shows he has a fascination with the 'lounge culture", Vegas glamor, high-rollers, mid-twentieth century America and such. This sounds like it's going into the early history of that sort of thing. Liberace was a well-known part of pop culture of that time and the ironies of his personality and life, in contrast to celebrity status of today, could be interesting if done well and Soderbergh has the kind of objectivity to capture those ironies.
