My thoughts about the new Black-Hawk-Down-esque sci-fi flick Battle: Los Angeles have been a bit like a roller coaster. When I first heard about the project, I was still on a District 9 high and was ecstatic about its possibilities. Then, I saw the film's teaser trailer and was sorely disappointed. But somehow, after multiple viewings, that same teaser ended up on my Best Trailers of 2010 list. And then down my thoughts went again as the second trailer was released, rehashing most of the same imagery and music as the teaser. But now, the new action packed TV spots and marketing material plastered all over LA have me excited once again for this film's release next month.
Yesterday, Sony debuted a new one sheet and viral video for Battle: Los Angeles that have only added to my excitement. Check 'em out below.
The poster shows off the huge alien craft we only get glimpses of in the trailer and really puts the scope of this film into perspective. It's fairly simple but reminds audiences what this film is, a gritty war film with aliens. The viral video is also short and sweet (6 seconds) but is fairly cool. It shows some of the other alien crafts hovering over the 110 freeway here in LA shot from a cell phone camera to heighten the reality factor. After this video, I'm hoping the studio does some more promo stunts here in LA leading up to the film's release.

The only thing is, after "Skyline" we see how this can be so terribly messed up. Hopefully there are some good characters to latch on to, and the speculation about alien contact and the expansion of dominant, expansionistic races is taken seriously so that you've got a good socio-political sc-fi element at the core of all the military action. Look, we all know - or should know - that a movie like this is just filling in for the catharsis of seeing a real Iraq or Afghanistan war movie, but the industry is too chicken-shit to make one. And the ComicCon geeks are too numbed by their videogames to be interested in a movie pertaining to the REAL wars going on, so hopefully this fills in, on some level, for that needed relevance.
