Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 5:55PM Actress Shortlist for 'Superman's Lois Lane

Now that we've got our next Superman, Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder have begun their search for his counterpart in Lois Lane. A few actresses have already come in to read for the part, a few more have been asked to come in, and one has even screen tested.
Hit the jump to find out which actresses have landed on the film's shortlist and who, at this point, is the frontrunner for the role.
According to early reports, the actresses that have read for the part or have been asked to come in are Kristen Stewart, Rachel McAdams, Jessica Biel, Dianna Agron, Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Now before anyone starts throwing a fit about the first name on the list, after the news of the shortlist broke this morning Kristen Stewart has officially taken herself out of the running.
Analyzing the rest of the list, I'd love to see McAdams in the role and a source close to her says she is very much interested. I can't really see Biel or Akerman as Lane and to be blunt their performances are typically hit or miss. Agron and Winstead are too young. And, I'm indifferent about Bell.
According to Latino Review, the actress who ends up flying with Supes isn't even one of the previously mentioned seven. One of their sources has Olivia Wilde not only reading for the role, but also screen testing. The source even says those involved on Wilde's next film, Kin, are working to push back the dates of their shoot to accommodate her work on Superman.
I personally love the idea of Wilde as Louis Lane. I've been a fan of hers since I saw her on The Black Donnellys and her performances have been getting increasingly better with time. She also has a certain "look" that fits with Snyder's casting in previous efforts.
Granted, until an actress officially signs on for the role, anything can change. And, shortlist reports for films of this magnitude in the past seem to be a revolving door. That being said, a few months ago we saw Anne Hathaway on the shortlist for The Dark Knight Rises and we all know how that ended.

People Magazine confirmed that KStew has never met anyone for the film or even approached for this. So that rumor is out. Also, supposedly Mila Kunis is a contender now.
Wilde is my pick, with Kunis as a runner up, although I am pretty weary of the crediblity of the sources that provided the shortlist. Wilde is perfect and pretty much has it in the bag. She's articulate and seems to project a sense of being intellectual. It doesn't hurt that she comes from a journalistic pedigree. All good things to portray Lois Lane. The downside is that she also has a few films based on graphic novels coming out- Kin (which may be pushed back depending on if she snags the part of Lois Lane) and Cowboys and Indians. Plus she's already associated with another franchise, Tron: Legacy. Would that hinder her chances for the role? Would people think of her as an action star actress? Kunis also looks promising as her career is kind of on the up and up and a blockbuster franchise would look great on her resume. Plus, I can see her as the neurotic, throwing out verbal vomit, journalist who doesn't give Clark Kent the time of day, but pines for Superman.
The more I think about it though, how often do directors ever consider the "dream cast" wishlists the fans have? Also, casting Lane will be determined on how modernized and how far are they going to delve into the Lois Lane character in the reboot. If the character is somewhat far from the tough and sassy, Margot Kidder/Lois Lane we all know, can these actresses from the short list pull it off? Will the character be complex? All I know is in Batman Begins, Katie Holmes was a terrible and forgettable love interest. I hope that I don’t say the same for Lois Lane in the reboot.
Someone mentioned somewhere that if all else fails, they should just “cast a relatively unknown actor for Lois, then surround her and Cavill with a kick ass, strong cast of veterans.” I’m already thinking backup Plan B-list: a dyed brunette Kate Mara of 127 Hours, Odette Yustman (The Unborn) or Emmy Rossum. She needs a big break.
Of those, McAdams would definitely be my choice. She's the right age, has the right persona and even looks the part. On the other hand she would also be the most expensive so the studio may push Snyder in another direction.
I'll second the Emmy Rossum vote.
I also liked the Black Donnellys, and Olivia Wilde would be my pick for Lois Lane.
