Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at 11:01PM DJ Caruso Says He'll Direct 'Preacher'
It's been a while since we've heard anything about Preacher, the movie adaptation of the cult-favorite DC Comics series. Nearly 2 years ago, producer—and at the time, possible director—Sam Mendes said the script, written by John August, was about halfway done. Then we heard that John Cusack was very interested in one of the lead roles, and I thought he seemed like the perfect choice to play the titular character. But we haven't had any news on this project for well over a year now, until today.

DJ Caruso, the director of such mediocre fair as Disturbia, Eagle Eye, and last weekend's I Am Number Four, today tweeted that he's just closed his deal on Preacher, meaning the film now has a director, so we can hope for more news on casting and a production schedule in the near future.
The comics tell the story of a fallen-from-grace preacher with supernatural powers who goes on a quest to find—and kill—God. He's accompanied by his assassin girlfriend and his best friend, a hard-drinking Irish vampire named Cass. Certainly a lot of room for a few actors to really explore some interesting characters, to say the least, and I still think that Cusack would be the perfect person to play the preacher.
Despite Caruso's less-than-stellar track record as a director (in my opinion), I still have some pretty high hopes for this project. For one, with Mendes overseeing it, I don't think it'll get too derailed. The biggest plus, though, is that John August is a phenomenal screenwriter. Most of his work has been with Tim Burton; among other projects, he previously adapted one of my all-time favorite movies, Big Fish. So that part has me excited.
On the other hand, like most comics series, Preacher is a pretty sprawling story, and it'll be hard to pare it down to into a cohesive sub-120 minute film. When I read it, it was in the form of 9 graphic novels, each of which could conceivably form the basis of its own movie. There are also several sub-plots that will likely have to be dropped entirely (similar to how Zack Snyder completely dropped the "Tales of the Black Freighter" from Watchmen—for the theatrical cut, at least). I think August has a good sense of how to handle such issues, though.
Personally I'm looking forward to Preacher picking up speed. We'll be sure to share any further news that comes along about this project as it surfaces.
