Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at 5:06PM Kiefer Sutherland Is Hopeful That '24' Will Shoot In January
On Regis and Kelly, Sutherland said:
"People come up to me and say they love the show. It's funny, because I don't feel like we finished. It's still such a presence in my life. There will (be a movie). We will hopefully start next January, and Tony Scott is one of the directors who has expressed great interest in doing it. I think he would be fantastic. I am really excited to do that."
Tony Scott seems like a logical choice to direct, though he's a director that seems incapable of rising above a mediocre script. If he has good material to work with (like in Man on Fire), he can do a good job with it, but otherwise his work tends to be forgettable. Reports are that Fox passed on the first script turned in for the film, so hopefully they can bring someone in to make it good before they start shooting this thing.
I do think they run the risk of waiting too long though. I feel like the longer the show is off the air, the less of an interest there is in a big screen Jack Bauer adventure.

Wait until January? It's February... so another year until they start filming? No one will care by then, let this die.
Tony Scott has really become the more stylized director of the Scott Brothers, more so even than Ridley - considered THE modern movie stylist. My guess is the first script for a "24" movie was passed on because it was basically a continuation of the tv series, probably conceived by the creators of that series, and as with Star Trek: The Next Generation, X Files and Sex and the City they're too close to the material and can't look at it as a movie for a bigger movie audience - many of whom may not be as familiar with the show. Going all the way back to "Beverly Hills Cop II" and "Top Gun" TONY Scott has always hit the right balance between style, star power and energy in his movies and when you look at movies like "Man on Fire", "Deja Vu" and even "Unstoppable" they're practically big movie versions of "24" already. So I think the key may be that they've come up with a good stand-alone premise that doesn't require one to have seen ANY of the show for 8 years. I think THIS plus Scott's now signature direction and Kiefer Sutherland's continued star power - really bolstered to a new level by eight years of such an era defining show - are just the right combustable elements to make this ignite on it's own, even more than two years after the show is off the air.
