New Expository 'Source Code' Trailer

With director Duncan Jones' sophomore effort Source Code set to open the 2011 South by Southwest Film Festival on March 11, it's no surprise that we're getting a new trailer to help whet our appetites.

What is a bit surprising is that this new trailer is much shorter than the previous ones we've seen (both the initial US one and the international one). As such, it provides much less of a sense of what the film will really feel like. On the other hand, it's a more straightforward summary of the movie's exposition, pretty much telling us exactly how the story is set up.

With a great-sounding cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, and Jeffrey Wright, I remain really intrigued and excited to see this movie—it's just that this new trailer doesn't really do anything to add to that excitement for me.

The script is the first theatrical feature film from writer Ben Ripley, and we know from Jones' excellent debut Moon that he can really present a fresh and unique take on some tried-and-true sci-fi story elements. I just hope he doesn't fall into the one-trick-pony trap that M. Night Shyamalan did, going for bigger and more surprising (and less satisfying) twists with each film. From the Source Code trailers I've seen so far, it seems obvious that Michelle Monaghan's character will be the "surprise" bomber, but I'm kind of hoping that's not the case just because it's way too trite. For those of us unfortunate enough to not be making the trip to Austin next month, Source Code will open in wide release on April 1. Personally, I still can't wait. Although this trailer doesn't do a lot for me, I still think just about the only bad-sounding aspect of this movie so far is its terrible title.
