First Glimpse of James Franco in 'Rise of the Apes'

I'm pretty sure James Franco has figured out a way to clone himself. Aside from the ridiculous amount of movie projects he's rumored to be attached to over the next couple of years (IMDB has the list at 8 upcoming films and counting), he's also hosting the Oscars this weekend—where he's also a nominee, for his leading role in 127 Hours—and working on a degree at Yale at the same time. Of the 4 films he has slated for release in 2011, Rise of the Apes is probably the most high-profile, and today we get our first look at it.

This actually is one role that's not played by James Franco... as far as we know.

This prequel to the Planet of the Apes franchise is "an origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy." We all know how that war ends up, but seeing how it comes about may be pretty fun. Aside from Franco, the film also stars Andy Serkis (of LOTR/Gollum infamy) as Caesar, the subject of Franco's character's experiments who gets the whole man-vs-apes ball rolling. The female lead is played by the lovely Freida Pinto, who of course got her start in Slumdog Millionaire.

The still below, courtesy of JoBlo, shows Will Rodman (Franco) working in his lab. Looks like a lot of MRI cross-sections of ape brains in the background, and he's working on some sort of serum on his computer while wearing a gigantic Bluetooth headset. With a scheduled release date of November 23 of this year, this is just the tip of the iceberg for Rise of the Apes material, but it's a start. It's definitely too early to start comparing it to Tim Burton's 2001 remake of the original Planet of the Apes story—a movie that I actually liked—but from the synopsis and Franco's track record alone, it shows promise.
