Monday, February 28, 2011 at 3:11AM Oscar Results and GTBP Scorecard
If you missed the Oscars telecast, you didn't miss much. I hate to say that, because I'm a big fan of the annual event—I treat it pretty much the same way I do Super Bowl Sunday: we have friends over, make tons of appetizers, have plenty of drinks, and play games while watching so we can have some winners of our own. But this year, the show just didn't do much for me. I thought that James Franco and Anne Hathaway brought pretty much nothing to the table, and were just really "safe" and uninteresting hosts. When Billy Crystal came out to tell an amusing story, I honestly thought for a second that the show's producers had realized that things weren't working and had decided to go to the bullpen for a tried-and-true host to handle the show's home stretch.

Despite my overall poor impression of this year's broadcast, there were some things to like. I thought the homages to Academy Awards ceremonies of the past were great, but wished we'd gotten more of them. And I really enjoyed the continuing gimmick of having the previous year's Best Actor and Actress winners—Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock in this case—deliver heartfelt messages to the current year's nominees while presenting those awards. As for acceptance speeches, I thought Aaron Sorkin's was the best—although he probably benefited from being preceded by the truly awkward Kirk Douglas appearance. Other than these few highlights, though, I thought the show was pretty ho-hum. We'd love to hear our readers' opinions of the show (especially if you disagree with me!), so please share them with us below.
We also have for you the list of all the winners, as well as the final scorecard tallying up how our own staff did with our predictions. Check it all out after the jump.

- Actress: Natalie Portman (Black Swan)
- Actor: Colin Firth (The King's Speech)
- Best Picture: The King's Speech
Not a lot of surprises, really. Most of us here at GTBP stuck with The Social Network with our predictions, although all of the hype as of late had The King's Speech as the front-runner, and that proved to be true. The biggest surprise, I thought, was for the Cinematography category—Wally Pfister is certainly deserving, but I really thought this would be the year Roger Deakins would get his due recognition for his work on True Grit (a film that got completely shut out).
We've got our full scorecard below. None of us managed to live up to the high standard that Colin had set in years past, but some of us came close.

Quite happy about the King's Speech/Tom Hooper win, actually. It did seem like The Social Network was one of those movies that Academy finds irresistible, but I'm glad they swung Hooper's way.
I also loved how the sound, visual and cinematography guys insinuated in their acceptance speeches that they didn't appreciate Christopher Nolan being left out of the best director category... Says something for how much the people who work with him respect him, really.
Well done Mike! you smoked us! I can honestly say that I've never been so pleased to have gotten best director and best picture wrong. The King's Speech Deserved everything it got. I hope they're still partying, wherever those crazy Brits are. =)
The voters are idiots. Tom Hooper over David Fincher? Also no best directing Nod for Christopher Nolan? If it wasn't going to be "The Social Network" it should've been "Inception".
You guys are absolutely terrible at predicting the Oscars, this blog is now a total joke. The pop up ads are terrible too. Every time I come back it's one step further away from the blog I used to cherish
Nelson: I'm genuinely sorry that you feel that way. But since our predictions were based on our personal opinions, not The Second Sight, I'll have to go ahead and say we gave it our best shot, and we were quite a bit more accurate than say, people who don't pay attention to the entertainment industry. All in all, I think we had fun with our little guessing game, and it's just too bad it failed to hit your standards. Guess we'll just have to brush up on our bone-scrying skills for next year!
I think its cool that you guys went with your feelings instead of putting who you thought was going to win because thats what everyone was saying. I knew Colin Firth was going to win and Kings Speech was going to win just by reading up on sh*t. Doesn't mean i agreed with it. My opinion was that Jeff Bridges was best Actor and True Grit was Best Picture. Doesn't mean i would have put money on it winning. I also thought Steinfeld should have been nominated as a leading role not Supporting and i'm glad in the red carpet show they mentioned the same thing. And Nolan got robbed again not getting a nom for Director. Thats the thing about these awards. Its not just about one persons opinion. Its based on a majority of opinions. Costume Design was the only thing that was unanimously agreed on up above. Good thing the Academy Awards are based on a majority vote otherwise only 1 oscar would have been given out this year.
