Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 4:00AM CBS Films Acquires Rights for Yet to Be Published Young Adult Book Series 'Legend'

Everybody wants a piece of the Twilight/Harry Potter pie. The transition these series have made from print sensation to box office monster has every studio exec browsing the Young Adult section of their local Barnes & Noble looking for the next big thing. Now with The Hunger Games, The Mortal Instruments, and The Last Apprentice all set make their big screen debuts all at different studios, CBS Films is jumping on the train.
The newly formed film branch of the television network as recently purchased the rights to the yet to be published young adult adventure series Legend. But unlike most series getting the feature film treatment, this one actually sounds interesting. Hit the jump to read the book's synopsis and find out a little more.
Legend will be published this November and is the first in a planned trilogy. The synopsis is as follows:
Taking place in a North America split into two warring nations, [the story] follows a young Robin Hood and a teen prodigy hired to hunt him down who uncover an impossible truth about their totalitarian leaders.
So instead of vampires and werewolves we've got a young Robin Hood and Sheriff of Nottingham. Sprinkle on some political overtones and color me intrigued. And this is where things take an unfortunate turn.
The film is being produced by Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, the producers on the Twilight Saga. And, the studio behind it all, CBS Films, is the one releasing Beastly, the modern-young adult retelling of Beauty and the Beast, next month.
So what will ultimately win out in the end, lackluster filmmakers or an interesting story? That is if the story does turn out to be interesting. Our first clue will come in November when Marie Lu's novel (who is also writing the film's screenplay) is released.
