Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at 3:03AM Nathan Fillion Finally Cast as Next 'Green Lantern'

Last year when director Martin Campbell and Warner Bros. were looking for someone to take up the mantle of Green Lantern there was an uproar from the online community that geek god Nathan Fillion land the role. There was even a fan made trailer which showed off the Castle and Firefly star in all his superhero glory (which I've enclosed below). If you can't remember that far back, it was very similar to what happened this year with Fillion and Uncharted. Apparently the actor can and should play everyone.
Ultimately the role of Hal Jordan, aka the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814, went to Ryan Reynolds. But the uproar was too much for the studio to ignore and Fillion has officially been cast as the Green Lantern.
Confused?
Unfortunately, Fillion won't actually be putting on the green ring anytime soon as the actor was cast as Hal Jordan in the DC Universe/Warner Bros. Animated Feature Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. The film will be released on Blu-Ray and DVD on June 7, 2011 to coincide with the theatrical release of Green Lantern a week later. Emerald Knights will be a "series of vignettes about the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force" and will feature the voices of Fillion, Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men), Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter), Henry Rollins, and Roddy Piper.
While I typically like my superheroes live action, I've really enjoyed these DC/Waner Bros. animated releases. I accidentally attended a screening of Green Lantern: First Flight a couple years ago at Comic Con (I had to sit through it to see a later presentation in the same room, anyone who has been to Comic Con knows what's up) and was pleasantly surprised. Since then, I've checked out almost all of the DVD releases and really haven't disliked any of them. They're all well crafted, extremely well voice acted (all have real Hollywood players in lead roles), and the Batman: Under the Red Hood release could be a worthy addition to Nolan's Batman trilogy.
So, while it's not a $100+ million summer blockbuster, it is A LOT better than nothing for Fillion fans. And, it's a lot better than nothing for Fillion himself. The actor is a huge Green Lantern fan, and when speaking to TV Guide recently said "I was always reading the comic books, I was always a spectator. Now I feel like I own a little piece of Green Lantern."
