Drew Barrymore to Direct 'How To Be Single'

If you're like me and were pleasantly surprised with just how good Drew Barrymore's directorial debut movie Whip It was then you'll be glad to know she has a follow-up project in the works.  THR reports today that Barrymore's sophmore effort will be in the form of a romantic comedy called How To Be Single, which will highlight the lives or relationships/breakups of a group of New Yorkers over the course of 10 years.  Hmm...haven't we seen this kind of movie before? 

The studio hopes that How To Be Single will be cut from the same cloth as the popular romantic comedies He's Just Not That Into You and Valentine's Day.  Barrymore will also produce the film adaptation based on the Liz Tuccilo novel, which writers Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn, who wrote the two comedies mentioned above, will pen the script for.  There's been no word on whether Barrymore will star in the film or not.

I enjoyed her unique perspective in the coming of age comedy Whip It, and liked how they used the relatively unknown sport of womens roller derby to tell the story of the young woman growing up in a small town played brilliantly by Ellen Page.  That's what makes this news of Barrymore's decision to helm another run of the mill romantic comedy so puzzling and disappointing.  It's sad to see her wanting to direct the genre of film she's been typecast in for years as an actress.

Expect the announcement of when production will begin on How To Be Single sooner than later.
