Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 8:40PM Darren Aronofsky to Quit 'The Wolverine'

Big news coming through the wire. Top flight director Darren Aronofsky has dropped out of directing The Wolverine for Fox. It was only a couple months back that he signed on and even then, we were wondering if he had too much on his plate.
Our concerns were exactly the reason why he left which wasn't caused by rift with management or creative differences. He just could not fit it into his schedule. Says Aronofsky:
"As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, it became clear that the production of The Wolverine would keep me out of the country for almost a year… I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won’t be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again."
While at first glance, it may seem like he just doesn't want to be out of the country for a year due to his family commitments, I think he just didn't want to be stressed and direct films back to back with overlap (with Machine Man). I'm sure that before he signed on, he knew that the film would be shot in Japan. This was well known way back.
Funny thing is, this isn't the first time he's done this. He was suppose to direct Batman: Year One for Warner and also, the Robocop reboot for MGM. He's bailed on both of them. Hey, when you're on top of the directing world, you get to call the shots I guess and right now Darren Aronofsky is very comfortable sitting at the top and having complete control over the gameplan.
Personally, I think this is a huge letdown for the Wolverine franchise which needed a director like this to do the character justice. What do you guys think?

FUCK. thats all i have to say. i was extremely excited.
Agreed. It's a shame Aronofsky quit the film. It went from a 5% chance of blowing to a 95% chance of doing so. It won't be anything special now. Just another retarded, blockbuster superhero movie like the rest of the X-men movies, the Spiderman movies, Iron Man Movies, The last Superman movie and so on.
Batman has been the only success with Batman Begins and the much overrated film The Dark Knight.
For HIM I think this is very good. With "The Wrestler" and now "Black Swan" I think he's really distinguished himself AND the kind of movies he makes and he just doesn't NEED a superhero/ComiCon movie. There are plenty of up-and-coming directors who can cut their teeth on another flick in a genre trend that will probably fade over the course of the decade anyway. He's really made his mark and he should continue in that direction.
That's exactly my point. That is exactly what those superhero movies need. Someone who knows how to make a great movie. Who can balance greatness and commercial success. Darren is right now the #1 director at that.
So for us who want to have a great experience in watching superhero movies, who are sick of these mindless blockbusters, this was a tradegy. We need someone who can do the comics/shows justice, as well as making a great film by itself.
agreed, ollie. that is a very good point. chris nolan has done very well in my opinion (i dont think the dark knight is overrated one bit), but i think darron could have honestly pushed the genre even further, the exact non-campy spark that it needed. oh well. damn it, seriously, i was really excited about this.
