Wes Craven Talks 'Scream 4' Script Troubles, Sequels, and a Look at 4 New Images

With the release of Scream 4 officially less than a month away, director Wes Craven has started to open up a little more to press and fans about all things in the franchise. Earlier today on his Twitter page, Craven described the film as "kick ass" and will leave audiences "wanting more".  We can only hope.

As the film went into production, there were a lot of questions and concerns as it was reported the studio had replaced screenwriter Kevin Williamson (who had penned the first two Scream films) with Ehren Kruger (writer of widely panned third Scream). Craven added fuel to the fire when shortly after the news broke he Tweeted from the set "no longer in control of the script".  We hadn't heard much on the issue until recently the director sat down with Total Film magazine to discuss the change in writer, the future of the franchise, and shared 4 new images from the film.

When asked about the Tweet, Craven had this to say:

"I was just stating the fact. In some ways it’s a Wes Craven film, and in ways it’s not entirely, because it’s not a script I have control of. It’s ultimately controlled by what the studio wants in the script. My job is much more bringing whatever experience and expertise and creativity I can. Look, there was a bumpy period when things shifted over from Kevin to Ehren. I signed up to do a script by Kevin and unfortunately that didn’t go all the way through the shooting. But it certainly is Kevin’s script and concept and ideas and themes."

So it seems like the studio wanted Williamson to make a few changes to his script (my money's on the ending primarily) which he didn't want to make, so they brought in Kruger to do the deed.  Nothing new in this industry but it does mean we'll never see the film Williamson and Craven intended.  Although it is encouraging to hear most of Williamson's script ended up on screen.

The conversation then shifted to the future of the franchise and potential sequels.  When Scream 4 was originally announced, it was intended as the start of a new trilogy.  But with all the turmoil at the start of production, nothing seemed guaranteed anymore and Craven addressed that:

"When I initially met with Kevin, he sketched out what the next two would be, and I found it really fascinating. A lot depends on whether they come up with scripts to flesh out. But certainly, I’m up for it, if the script is there. It’s a fascinating thing to do two trilogies in a career."

While Craven let on the future of the franchise depends on the next script, it ultimately depends on Scream 4's opening weekend.  If the film proves to be a box office success, the studio will come up with the scripts.  From which writer we don't know, but the scripts will get written.  If the film doesn't open, the studio will take the stance no one cares about the franchise anymore and cut their loses now.  But something tells me we'll see another trilogy run its course.

Scream 4 hits theaters April 15.
