Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 8:00AM 'Candyland' Adaptation Gets its Writers... Yay?!

Soooooooo... yeah, this is happening. In case you didn't know, last year Universal signed a deal with Hasbro Toys to make films based on the company's properties (which is why we're getting Battleship and Stretch Armstrong). Along with those two, one of the first properties to be optioned was the board game Candyland, to which we all laughed mockingly at the idiocy of the idea.
Well that laughter died today as the studio hired Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, the writers of Kung Fu Panda, to pen the script moving this film two spaces past the gumdrop forest and one step closer to reality.
THR has the scoop about the writers being brought on to the live action film in which Kevin Lima (Enchanted) is already attached to direct. There's no word yet on the story pitch that got them the job, but let's be real we're gonna be following a group of kids that somehow get magically sucked into the land of candy and have to find their way home.
I can't say with a straight face that this film is a good idea, BUT the people Universal is bringing on seem like a good fit. While Aibel and Berger have the two Alvin and the Chipmunks sequels in their filmography, Kung Fu Panda had some quality moments in its screenplay. And, Lima's work on Enchanted was stellar, although its cast is what really made the film work. Which, I'm sure will be a major factor in the success or failure Candyland as well.
We're still over a year out from our first glimpse at whether or not this Universal/Hasbro marriage will pay off with the release of Battleship. So don't expect a lot of movement on any of the other Hasbro projects until we get closer to that day.
