Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 8:54AM Hugh Jackman Still Hopeful for 'The Wolverine'

The development road for Fox's Wolverine sequel, so bluntly titled The Wolverine, has been quite the veritable roller coaster. After the first X-Men Origins film was panned by pretty much the entire world, fans were rightfully worried by the idea of a sequel. Then when it was announced the film would follow Frank Miller's fantastic Japan-centric storyline, things started to look up. And then, when indie darling Darren Aronofsky signed on to direct, things took on a whole new level of awesome. Now, cut to the last few weeks when Aronofsky decided to walk from the project and the horrifying events in Japan have left the sequel in a state of uncertainty.
So what now? Does Fox put the project into turn-around? Or do they stay the course while looking for a new ship captain? Right now, no one really knows. But ComingSoon caught up with the Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, at this week's Cinema Con and, when asked those same questions, seemed very optimistic.
Jackman put it both bluntly and optimistically:
"We need to find another director and once we’ve found that, we’ll be able to know. It’s too early to call on Japan, I’m not sure where they’re at, so now we’re finding another director, but Fox is very anxious to make the movie and we’re moving ahead full steam to find another director."
As terrible as it may sound, the catastrophic events in Japan may actually have helped this project. Yes, the film requires Japan as its backdrop and the tragedy in that region will prevent shooting there for quite some time. But, this delay allows Fox the time to not only pursue another director but find the right director for the project rather than scramble to fill the unexpected opening left by Aronofsky.
Meanwhile, franchise producer Lauren Shuler-Donner spoke with Empire magazine about the project. Granted, her quotes were prior to Aronofsky's departure and the events in Japan, they were still very encouraging about Christopher McQuarrie's script. Which, hopefully, is still in play once everything shakes out:
"It will have depth and a dramatic backbone… And yet there’s more action in this one than in any one we’ve ever done. It’s such a good script. We have the great Christopher McQuarrie writing and it’s very true to the Japanese saga. This is Logan on his own…"
