Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 4:29AM Smooth Move, Warner Brothers: Studio Picks Lane to Play Superman's Mum
So no, she’s not playing Lara-El, tragically blown-up alien mother to the Man of Steel. No, of course the news today is that Diane Lane, frequent portrayer of sexy older women, will instead be playing Martha Kent, loving, adoptive (and possibly sexy) mom to recently-cast Brit Henry Cavill’s Superman.
I'll go out on a limb and say this won't be her wardrobe for this one.
The woman who’s explored themes of adultery twice with Richard Gere (what a weird, true, statement) is a good get for Warner Brothers, who’re likely looking to pad the cast around the lesser-known Cavill with top-shelf co-stars. In fact, she’s not the only name that’s been tossed around for a role in Superman: Man of Steel; we've already said that Daniel Day-Lewis is reportedly being sought to play General Zod, and I can honestly say that Day-Lewis joining this cast would be so ridiculous, it might just wrap back around and then be amazing. The part may also go to Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen, with Day-Lewis instead taking on the role of Jor-El, Superman’s ephemeral biological father.
Director Zack Snyder has flatly denied any rumors that Zod will be the villain, though, so maybe it’s not such a good idea to start picturing Day-Lewis drinking our milkshake whilst trapped in a whirling piece of glass. I’m digressing though, because Snyder did have something to say about the acquisition of Ms. Lane. He said:
“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”
I’m inclined to agree, Zack. Lane’s got a presence that really works with the wizened concept surrounding the Kent’s characters. It’ll be interesting to see whom she’s paired with; Jonathan Kent has a decent hand in shaping Superman’s personality, as well.
Overall, there’s definitely a lot more casting to be done, considering the scale of the film and the hopes Warner Brothers has for it. So those rumors about Cavill’s other possible co-stars? They wont be the last. Not by a long shot.

I've always been a big fan of Diane Lane and she's still very attractive.
