Friday, April 1, 2011 at 2:29AM Check out the First Six Minutes of Zack Snyder's 'Sucker Punch'

Before it's opening, Zack Snyder's girls-with-machine-guns epic Sucker Punch was met with a lot of venom and negativity from critics (read our more positive than not review here). And after its poor performance at the box office this weekend, the general public seems to agree... leaving me in the minority of people who didn't think it was that bad. Yes, it did have some glaring flaws, but it in no way deserved the amount of hatred that's being thrown at it.
Still needing to recoup more than three quarters of its budget, Warner Bros. has decided to release the first six minutes of Sucker Punch online in hopes that it sways some members of the public that were put off by the negative reviews into checking out the film for themselves in theaters. And this film is one that DEFINITELY should be seen in theaters. So if you haven't seen it yet, check out the opening sequence below.
While I agree with Warner's last ditch effort to appeal to viewers through this method, showing off the first few minutes might not have been the best idea. One of my main gripes with the film was the clunky dialogue in the opening (and closing) voiceover, which is a microcosm to the main problem at hand in Snyder's script. And on top of that, if you've seen the film you know that almost immediately after this clip ends we jump off the deep end from the gritty gothically cool real world seen here to the awkward glitzy brothel world in the first fantasy level that dominates the rest of the film. So in a way, it's almost false advertising of what to expect over the next two hours highlighted with a really poor (but apparently necessary) voiceover.
Love it or hate it, I really urge you guys to check this film out in theaters if you haven't yet and form your own opinion.

For all the formula "comic book movies" out there, endlessly telling "origin" stories, Snyder has made a "pure" comic book movie on par with his earlier "300" and "Watchmen and "Sin City". Nolan may be the genuine story crafter of this comic book trend/era but Snyder is the supreme stylist and it's going to be great seeing those energies come together with their rendition of Superman.
My thoughts exactly. Snyder really takes a different spin on the comics turned movies; anything Marvel and DC feels like a movie, with an idea from a comic. Here, we are literally watching a comic book come to life, and it feels that way. Sure, there were things wrong with Sucker Punch, but it was still a really fun movie. What gets me is that it is getting most of it's bad press for the reasons I liked it. Like I've said, the way I view movies may be changing; instead of a critic's eye, I'm basing it on whether or not I enjoy the film, and what adds or takes away from it.
