Friday, April 1, 2011 at 2:55PM Steve Carell, Keira Knightley to Play Friends in 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World'
With Steve Carell's long, successful run as everyone's favorite boss Michael Scott on The Office soon coming to an end, he is certainly keeping his future schedule stacked with multiple movies to star in. The popular comedian, who recently wrapped up production on the film Crazy, Stupid, Love with Ryan Gosling and Julianne Moore, has now added another project to his evergrowing list of roles.
Deadline reports that Carell plans to star alongside Keira Knightley in writer/actress Lorene Scafaria's directorial debut film Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.
Scafaria, who wrote the screenplay for Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, will also pen the script for her first feature film that stars an unlikely onscreen duo in Carell and Knightley.
The film's story "takes place at a time when a giant asteroid heads toward Earth, almost certain to destroy the planet. Carell plays a man suddenly alone when his wife leaves. His high school sweetheart writes him saying she wants to be with him when the world stops. His neighbor (Knightley) accompanies him on the road trip as love blooms at the worst possible time."
Spending time alone with Knightley on a road trip sounds more appealing to me than seeking out an old flame from high school, whom you haven't seen in years. So, the premise of this movie sounds a little flat to me, especially considering the end of the world element to it.
I also honestly haven't been impressed by any of Carell's performances in movies, other than The 40-Year-Old Virgin and his small role in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. In spite of all that, he's still a big enough draw to make me want to see his movies. It's funny how that works.
There's been no official word on when production for Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is expected to begin yet.
