A 585,000 square-foot facility will be the new home of motion-capture photography production to be used in Avatar 2 and 3. It is reported that James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment will move in there for the next several years while Avatar 2 and 3 are being produced. Avatar 2 is scheduled to release in 2014 and Avatar 3 will release in 2015 so the production crew will be there for awhile.
Manhattan Beach, is a beautiful location on the waters of southern Califonia so I'm sure the crew will love their new location. A facility that big in Manhattan Beach is extremely expensive but I guess thats what happens when you're pretty much given a blank check to make the most visually stunning film to date. For your information, the original Avatar was filmed at the Hercules Campus in Playa Vista. This new campus is called the "MBS Media Campus". It is not known whether any of the live action sequences will be shot at MBS. MBS also were used for Iron Man 2 and Thor.
Four years in the making then Avatar 2 will come out. You have the right to expect something extraordinary.

Yeah, extraordinarily disappointing!
The stakes - and expectations - ARE raised for the rest of the Avatar trilogy. As it advances it WILL be a different kind of story though, now that it's a trilogy. Cameron's been on this for well over a decade and a half now anyway, so I'm sure he's got lot's of ideas, it's just all about working it into a narrative that advances things from the already epic canvass of the first movie. The development of the new facilities is probably so they can be used for projects beyond Avatar, so somebody thinks the investment is a sound one.
