Box Office Weekend Results: 'Rio' Scares Away 'Scre4m'

Hooray for the death of a crappy horror franchise!  This time, brand recognition just didn't make up for subpar content as Scream 4, widely viewed as a clear cut winner before this weekend, got killed at the box office.  Lets just hope that even though Scream 4 will still make money for the production/distribution companies, they recognize that Scream 5 would perform even worse than this one if they make it.

Rio saw some success at the box office as the feathered animated feature sold $39.2 million in ticket sales.  In fact, it is the largest opening weekend for any film in 2011, beating Rango which sold $38.1 million.  However, last year during this time, How to Train Your Dragon opened at $43.7 million so we didn't do much in terms of catching up to last years box office lead.  Internationally, the film grossed $129.1 million!

So what happened with Scre4m?  Well, the older crowd that enjoyed Scream 3 11 years ago were supposed to come out but 54% of the audience was under 25.  So people who recognized the film weren't so happy with Scream 3.
