What kind of self-respecting bunny would turn down the opportunity to assume the illustrious position of the famed Easter Bunny? If you have ever pondered this query, look no further. The answer lies in Tim Hill’s holiday production of Hop, starring James Marsden and Russell Brand.

The Easter tale, that follows a frighteningly similar plot as many Christmas films, is the story of E.B., the son of the current Easter Bunny, voiced by Hugh Laurie. Prepped to assume his father’s position in the next week, E.B. decidedly has other plans. Hitching a high-tech rabbit-hole ride from Easter Island to Hollywood, California, the little talking bunny plans to fulfill his dream, to become a professional drummer. When his attempt to infiltrate the playboy mansion, on account of the fact that he too is a sexy bunny, fails, he wanders the lonesome Hollywood streets, until he stumbles upon the desperately unmotivated, unemployed Fred O’Hare. As their friendship forms, the two help one another to realize their true callings.

Let me start by saying that Russell Brand is screamingly funny as the rebellious E.B., delivering with comic perfection the many punch lines in the film. Though I enjoy children’s films, I rarely laugh out loud, and there were several moments during Hop that I laughed all the way from one punch line to another. Unfortunately, Brand’s performance was not enough to lift this movie out of mediocre territory.

The film had trouble establishing the world we are entering in to as our current reality, or one in which most people, Fred excluded, accept the existence of talking rabbits, the Easter Bunny, and jelly bean poo. It would seem, based on Fred’s hysterical fright over his first encounter with E.B., that animals do not speak, wear clothes, or play the drums. However, E.B.’s British little self elicits no surprise from diner waitresses, the passers-by, or David Hasselhoff.

In addition, the Easter Bunny’s chick-powered sleigh and candy factory is far too reminiscent of that of Santa Clause. Though the film acknowledges this similarity, I found myself longing for the Easter Bunny to have his own identity and tricks of the trade. It seems like a pretty wide arena for creativity that the writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio just schluffed off. It is too bad too, for next the fabulous performances by Brand and Hank Azaria, as the plotting chick, Carlos, the script and concept appears flat and unworthy.

James Marsden, though committed to the role and I believe put forth a great effort, comes off as forced and campy in an attempt to emulate some “children’s movie” sort of acting. On the other hand, I found myself a new fan of Kaley Cuoco, who plays Sam O’Hare, Fred’s sister. Funny, sweet, and with great comic delivery, Cuoco is an actress to keep you eye out for.

So, there are no points for originality this round, nor would I say that the time was adequately taken in the writing process to deliver a tight, concise, clever script. The film appears to be a Holiday rush-job with little pay-off in the creativity department. If your child, however, is dying to see this film, Brand’s performance, and the antics of his flavorful little E.B. will be worth your sitting there for an hour and a half. Just beware, the ending is strange, forced, and so detached from any current form of thinking or emotion that it is hard not to shake your head and say “What?” So, if your child is not dragging you to the theater, I would wait for this one to air on The Family Channel.
