Monday, April 25, 2011 at 6:12PM Paul Greengrass May Direct 'The Deep Blue Good-By' for Leonardo DiCaprio to Star in?
It's great to see Paul Greengrass linked to possibly directing another promising movie, especially since Universal recently pulled the rug out from under him regarding his plans to direct the Martin Luther King Jr. biopic Memphis. While the director is on the hunt for financiers for Memphis, he's also said to be eyeing a new project called The Deep Blue Good-By with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star, according to Deadline.
The Deep Blue Good-By will be adapted from the John D. MacDonald detective series that has been set up at 20th Century Fox with DiCaprio's production company Appian Way since September of 2009. The popular actor is slated to play a beach bum private eye who is responsible for recovering stolen property for his various clients. Oliver Stone was believed to have interest in helming the film, but has since started production on his movie Savages.
Greengrass isn't the only director being considered for the project, which could prove to be a blessing in disguise if he ever wants to get Memphis off of the ground. One would hope in the meantime, he's able to find some investors and a studio with some balls to make the Dr. King biopic.
Either way Fox will have to find a director able to work around DiCaprio's hectic schedule, as he finishes Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar and begins filming The Great Gatsby. At least for now The Deep Blue Good-By is on our radar, and we may soon learn whether Greengrass will be behind the camera or not.
