Arthur, the remake of the 1981, Dudley Moore classic, stars Russell Brand, America’s new favorite saucy Brit, as the inebriated Peter Pan caught between a life of endless riches and the potential of true love. The film introduces us to our quick-witted, yet impetuous alcoholic of a hero, as he is presented with an ultimatum: either marry the socially respectable, yet morally despicable, Susan, (Jennifer Garner) or be cut off from his multi-million dollar family fortune. Despite his disgust for and sexual repulsion to Susan, Arthur is unable to imagine his life without an endless supply of booze, partying, and movie-car replicas. He complies, and surrenders to having a business partnership for a marriage. That is until he fatefully runs into the free spirited, illegal tour guide, Naomi (Greta Gerwig). Smitten beyond the usual one-night-stand Arthur has become so accustomed to, he must confront his behaviors, his choices, his live-in nanny (Helen Mirren), and most importantly, himself, to decide what greater power will control his destiny.
The film gets off to a slow, sloppy, and somewhat confusing start. The jokes don’t quite hit, and the initial development is halting and awkward. A new contribution to the Russell Brand fan club myself, I took a deep, inward sigh, and resigned myself to an hour and a half of disappointment. Thankfully, not fifteen to twenty minutes in, Arthur strapped on the power packs and took off!
First off, I am keeping my Brand Club Membership card, as the man is riotously funny throughout the second and third act of the film, while packing a surprisingly emotional punch. Who knew that this flamboyant wild man could actually draw some real tears from a movie-watching audience? Well, I can tell you that I do now, and he does it more than once. In addition, his connection and true on-screen chemistry with the endearingly quirky Gerwig is moving enough to motivate this comedy out of the usual realm in which these films inherently seem to dwell.
Another triumphant performance, yet less surprising due to her incredible body of work, is Helen Mirren’s. Her Hobson is one of the most intelligently and completely crafted supporting characters that I have seen in a comedy film in a long time. The arc is tremendous, skillfully constructed, and entirely believable. The Arthur challenge I present to myself and others is: if perchance, you are inspired to watch this film a second time, keep your eyes on Mirren in every scene that she is in. Chances are you will not see one moment that isn’t complete, whether she is speaking or not. This type of commitment, though the mark of a true actor, are rarely seen in today’s situational comedy films. She is a gift to this film, and provides just the right amount of salt to Brand’s unique sauce.
Garner is similarly convincing, but her character lacks any true dimension, making her Susan appear to be a one-sided, conniving opportunist. This isn’t all together bothersome, but in light of the range explored by the other actors in the film, it would have been nice to see a side of Susan that may have actually been emotionally invested in the circumstances outside of the monetary rewards of the pending marriage.
So, though the film hiccups along at the top, if you have some patience and a love of Brand, stick around and reap the rewards of several, layered out-loud laughs. Just beware, Russell’s quick tongue may have you laughing over some of his subsequent after-shock gigglers, leaving you looking around to your neighbors wondering what everyone else heard that you didn’t.
