The most legendary Barbarian of all time is back on August 19, 2011. So... most of us know the story of Conan the Barbarian, but if not here's a recap. The quest begins as a personal vendetta for the fierce Cimmerian warrior soon turns into an epic battle against barbaric warriors, horrific monsters, and impossible odds, as Conan realizes he is the only hope of saving the great nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil. Deftly adapted from the original works of Robert E. Howard and pretty faithful to the original concept of his iconic character, 'Conan the Barbian' stars Jason Momoa, Mickey Rourke, Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Ron Perlman and Rose McGowan, and is directed by Marcus Nispel.
Watch the trailer and then we'll talk...
Now we have the basic and boring information out of the way... does anyone have any hope that this movie will even be a poor man's red headed cousin of the original movie? No, but we are likely never going to love or even like a reboot, reimagination, remake, or whatever marketing word they want to use next. So what I'm going to try is to drink a couple glasses of wine, get an enormous tub of buttery and salty popcorn goodness, and clear my head of anything before watching this movie. If any of us can do that I believe this could be a satisfying and pleasurable movie experience.... but I could be wrong.
Ideally, at best, a cinematic translation of THE BOOKS would come off basically as a good western that takes place 12,000 years ago. My fear is that they're copying the Milius movie, God forbid the second movie or at worst - thinking they're making a modern version of the Steve Reeves "Hercules"movies. This is every bit important a translation from the sword and sorcery/fantasy/adventure genre as was "Lord of the Rings" and so far I don't see any hints that this is doing that. I REALLY hope they surprise me but so far it looks like they only looked at the illustrated covers of the Conan novels and they've adapted THAT instead.

So far, in all the trailers I've seen I still have not seen anything better than James Earl Jones turning into a giant snake.
This is a no go for me.
