Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 5:04PM Mel Gibson in Negotiations to Join Cast for Heist Flick 'Sleight of Hand'

I have no doubt that Mel Gibson will put his foot in his mouth again in the future and say something ridiculously inappropriate. But until that snafu comes, it appears starring in The Beaver is only the beginning of Gibson's second chance in Tinsel Town.
Variety reports, one of the new projects Gibson is eyeing is an upcoming comedy heist movie called Sleight of Hand, where he would join the likes of 24 star Kiefer Sutherland, Thomas Jane and Gerard Depardieu. The robbery film will be written and directed by Brad Mirman who recently created the series The Confession, which stars Sutherland as an assassin in search of redemption in the world of good vs evil.
Sleight of Hand is described as "a bunch of bungling burglars in Paris who inadvertently steal a rare gold coin belonging to a gangster" by Variety.
What role they have in mind for Gibson is unknown at this point. My guess is this movie ends being either surprisingly decent or awful beyond words, but the possible inclusion of Gibson makes it much more appealing. He has excelled in action/comedic roles like this throughout his storied career: The Lethal Weapon franchise and Payback are a few examples that come to mind.
The Beaver proved that Mel Gibson is back in the game, and Sleight of Hand just might further prove it.

I would be glad to see Mel back up on the screen and active in film. He's talented, he entertains me a lot more than any of the lightweights in Hollywood these days. The Beaver was never meant to be a huge box-office hit, not with that subject matter. But is was a damn good film and Mel gives an award-winning performance. He could keep doing small independent films like that and I would be happy as well.
