Monday, May 2, 2011 at 3:38PM Kathryn Bigelow to Direct Movie About Osama Bin Laden?
With many of us still in total disbelief regarding last night's shocking news about the death of infamous Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, I guess it was only a matter of time before folks in Hollywood decided to make a movie about his story. Today Deadline reports, The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow is in the pre-production stages of an indie film that is possibly about this subject.

Previous reports indicated Bigelow was working on a movie called Held by the Taliban, based on a series of articles by journalist David Rohde, although various rumors had her working on a "black ops" thriller about the hunt for Bin Laden.
According to Deadline, she is currently casting for a movie with the working title Kill Bin Laden. Hmmm...that's quite a coincidence! Apparently, this film is believed to be about a previous failed attempt to track down the Al Qaeda leader when he was hiding in the mountains between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
They've denied that the project is specifically about Bin Laden, so they may choose to fictionalize it a little by changing the names of those involved in the story. Bin Laden's character will now be called Lin Baden, for example. Of course, I'm joking.
The Hurt Locker writer Mark Boal has already written the script for this movie, and they are said to be currently courting Joel Edgerton for the lead role. Edgerton, meanwhile seems to be linked to every new script out there.
9/11 and Iraq style war movies haven't fared well at the box office in recent years, so it's hard to belief a movie about Bin Laden would do much better. That's good news for me. I like those kind of movies, but don't like sitting in a crowded theater.
Would you see a movie about Bin Laden? Is it a good/bad idea? Too soon?
