Monday, May 2, 2011 at 7:06AM New poster for Green Lantern
I don't know about you, but I've been rather underwhelmed by all things Green Lantern. This new poster doesn't do much to improve that outlook. Keep in mind, I want this movie to do well. In my opinion Ryan Reynolds should be a huge star and this movie's success would help him down that path. As a fan of comic book movies I'm rooting for it, but my spidey sense (I know wrong hero) is telling me that this thing is going to stink.
Take a look at the poster and join me after the jump to break it down:

All I can think of when I take a gander at this poster is the studio that makes direct rip offs of successful movies: Asylum. They make such classics as Transmorphers, 30,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and The Day the Earth Stopped. While I can't say that I've ever watched one of these gems, I can tell you that they are awful. There are some simple truths in life, Asylum fims being awful is one of those simple truths.
This poster comes across as cartoony to me. I think it, along with everything else that I've seen, might be an indication as to the asthetic of the film. Mr Reynold's head looks poorly photoshopped onto the body and the background just looks fake. Of course everything on the poster IS fake, but I don't believe it's supposed to LOOK that way. If we take the same logic from the poster to the movie itself, does that mean that the film will look fake? I don't know the answer to that question, but I certainly hope not.
I guess the old addage that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover might apply here. It's just a poster designed to get your attention and likely is not an indication as to the quality of the film. I'm sure I'm just being hypercritical. However, when you take into acount all the other marketing for the film it doesn't bode well.
As you can see on the poster, Green Lantern opens June 17, 2011.

Jeremy Henson might be the best breakout critic I've seen! Look out Roger Ebert.. there's a new guy in town and he's ROCKING it! Henson nails it here - The poster is crap. It looks bad and it doesn't make me want to even look at the poster, let alone watch the movie. Ryan Reynolds IS a huge star, but just like Matt Damon, Robin Williams and Vin Diesel.. they've all done movies they arent ot proud of. It keeps them humble. THIS movie will be one of Reynolds' humblers. I just hope he can snag a role afterwards to keep him from hopping a train to Suckyville. Plus, my wife thinks he's hot and I don't want this movie to be responsible for changing that.
What ... are ... you ... talking ... about?!?! The poster looks great! Direct rip-off of what? Tomar-Re was introduced 50 years ago. Green Lantern's original ideas about a universe of diverse intelligent life - plant, animal & mineral - was groundbreaking FIFTY YEARS AGO. At the time those Marvelous characters were first coming out, Green Lantern had already blazed a path they still haven't surpassed.
You're just pulling criticism out of a dark place where the sun doesn't shine. Keep your bitchy, baseless yet Marvelous whining to yourself, self-proclaimed "Critic".
This is no doubt a game changer, this is huge. I too wonder what this means for seo. Google never ceases to amaze me, this is yet another great idea, I can wait for it to all pan oThis is no doubt a game changer, this is huge. I too wonder what this means for seo. floridaphil: Just a quick clarification - I wasn't talking about Green Lantern ripping off any themes from previous films or comics for that matter. I was merely talking about the poster itself. The POSTER is cheap. It doesn't look good. Just like the previews for the film are bad. The movie just looks bad to me. I'm not a critic, by the way, nor did I ever call myself one. I'm a movie fan. And as fan of movies - not comic books - it looks lame. I'm not excited for this one. I hope I'm wrong, too. I really do like Ryan Reynolds.
