Friday, May 20, 2011 at 12:03PM Trailer for Jim Carrey's 'Mr. Popper's Penguins' is Short on Laughs
When the funniest part of a trailer is a dude getting pegged in the balls with a kicked soccer ball, 9 times out of 10 that movie is going to suck...well...balls. Jim Carrey's new comedy Mr. Popper's Penguins definitely fits the bill in that regard, and may soon find itself in a tug of war with The Smurfs for this summer's worst looking movie.
Mark Waters, the director that gave us such masterpieces as Mean Girls and Freaky Friday, helms this story of a businessman (Carrey) who inherits half a dozen penguins to keep in his apartment. We all know an apartment is no place to raise penguins, thus chaos ensues and the man's life gets out of control. Sounds like another four star movie for Mr. Carrey.
One positive is the lovely Carla Gugino plays Carrey's wife in this penguin-driven comedy. Unfortunately, much to my dismay and an expected PG rating, her incredible cleevage that I grew so accustomed to admiring on episodes of Californication last season probably won't be making an appearance in Mr. Popper's Penguins.
If you like former big name movie stars playing a mildly-amusing second fiddle to a bunch of animals then this movie is for you. Mr. Popper's Penguins is a far cry from the hilarious Jim Carrey movies I grew up watching, and that makes me sad.
