Directed by Sam Raimi, Oz: The Great and Powerful has made news on the web twice this week, first for its release date and its latest casting for a pivotal role in the film.
Firstly, as reported to Entertainment Weekly, the movie will have an intended premiere of March 8, 2013. Oz is also being released in Disny Digital 3D, take that news however you wish. I'm hoping prequel is as much a spectacular visual bonanza as it was with The Wizard of Oz.
The second bit of news is the casting of Joey King as "China Girl". Variety describes the role as a girl "who's made of porcelain, is taken in by Oz after her family is killed by an evil witch (Weisz)." Joey King has an impressive resume for a young girl, including: Ramona and Beezus, Battle: Los Angeles, Quarantine, a voice role in Horton Hears a Who!, the upcoming TV series Bent, this summer's Crazy, Stupid, Love. and lately a role in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.
Oz: The Great and Powerful begins production this summer and will star James Franco (Oz) as an oil salesman; Mila Kunis (Wicked Witch of the West Theodora) and Rachel Weisz (Wicked Witch Evanora) will be the two of three withch sister which includes Michelle Williams (as Glinda the Good Witch). Oz: The Great and Powerful is written by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire based on the novel by L. Frank Baum.
