Stanley Kubrick, whether you hate him or love him, will go down as one of the most brilliant filmmakers in history. He made some of the most influential films of the last half-century. The first time I saw Dr. Strangelove I wasn't even sure what a satire was, but I knew that movie was hilarious. With names like BrigGen. Jack Ripper and Col. Bat Guano, and a character so patriotic he rides a 'nuke' like a bronco en route to destiny, what's not to like. Then there is the more serious and controversial (but weren't they all a little controversial) side in films like Lolita and Full Metal Jacket. And, of course, 2001: A Space Odyssey, one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. The collection is worth buying for those four films alone. It would be blasphemous of me to talk about the great films this man made and not throw out a nod to A Clockwork Orange, one of the only films to truly scramble my brain after watching it. What a great body of work. The other films in the collection include: The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, Spartacus (which I'm not even sure he would claim as his own), and Barry Lyndon. Each one fantastic for what Kubrick had as his vision for it.
Stanley Kubrick: The Essential Collection is now available to anyone willing to drop a pretty penny for it, but if you are a die-hard Kubrick junkie price is but a small obstacle.
