Friday, May 6, 2011 at 8:48PM Jamie Bell Shows Off His Dark Side In 'Retreat'

Anyone who does any reading on storytelling is going to see a variation on the phrase “There are no more original stories to tell,” over and over again, especially the more you narrow the story down to its core. It’s not the story, but the way the story is told that has to be original nowadays.
Retreat very loosely follows the ‘new guy in town’ model (when boiled down), and there is no shortage of tales on this subject to say the least. This particular tale is going to rely on the strength and vision of first-time writer/director Carl Tibbetts, and the casting that has been shuffled around and ultimately put together to include Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton, and Jamie Bell.
I would expect nothing but stellar performances from Murphy and Newton, but I don’t really go out of my way to watch Jamie Bell, who is most notably remembered as Billy Elliot. After viewing the trailer there is no doubt in my mind that Bell showed up to play and brought his A-game with him.
The premise of the story is Murphy and Newton leave civilization, for a small secluded island on a getaway for a little ‘we’ time only to have Bell’s character wash up on shore carrying with him news of a viral outbreak that is sweeping through Europe. They have no way of verifying Bell’s apocalyptic news, and the fun begins as trust diminishes.
There is no release date set for the States yet, but it’s supposed to premiere in the UK sometime this year. Retreat could be a good film to watch after the hustle and bustle of summer movie going subsides, if it has made it to theaters by then.
