Friday, May 6, 2011 at 3:29PM Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones Headline Strong Cast in Negotiations to Join Spielberg's 'Lincoln'
Steven Spielberg's upcoming Abraham Lincoln movie was already destined to be an epic blockbuster once he signed on to direct. Anticipation for the film grew ten fold when Daniel Day-Lewis agreed to breakout of his usual two year hiatus from acting to play the popular 16th President.
Last night, Deadline reported about a surprisingly long list of talented actors, headlined by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tommy Lee Jones who are in negotiations to join the project. Can anyone else see Spielberg polishing his next Oscar trophy already?

Gordon-Levitt is in talks for the role of Robert Todd Lincoln, the eldest son of the president, while the studio likes Jones for Thaddeus Stevens, a powerful Republican leader and U.S. congressman from Pennsylvania. David Costabile (Breaking Bad), Byron Jennings, Dakin Matthews, Boris McGiver, Gloria Reuben (ER), Jeremy Strong and David Warshofsky (Taken) are also in talks with Dreamworks for various supporting roles in the film. Sally Field is also slated for the role of Lincoln's wife.
The film's story will be adapted from author Doris Kearns Goodwin's best-selling novel "The Team of Rivals", and will center on Lincoln's political collision with the powerful men in his cabinet towards abolition and an end to the Civil War.
Filming on Lincoln is expected to begin in Virginia during the fall of 2011.

They MUST more confident of what they have over "The Conspirator". With a wider release, AND the cache of it being Spielberg AND the cast, AND maybe the Oscar buzz that they'll probably try to create for it - maybe it'll do better. "The Conspirator" hasn't made - and probably won't make - half of it's 25 million budget, Spielberg's doing it with 125. Both movies are really something made for people to look at many years in the future - but for it to generate THAT kind of regard Spielberg MUST be more attentive to history on this movie than he was on "Amistad". At least "The Cospirator" has THAT going for it. At any rate I think it's interesting that given the reception of "The Conspirator" they're moving ahead like they are. I guess it's where we're looking back this year at the 100 year mark of the start of the Civil War.
