Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 10:33PM New Promotional Stills For 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides'
Can Pirates of the Caribbean sustain its summer competition?
The rapidly approaching May 20th, 2011 release date for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has sent Walt Disney out on a promotional spree. Recently released by Walt Disney Pictures showcases many of the franchise iconic leads in Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Barbosa (Georffrey Rush) but, we get to see some newbies with Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and Angelica (Penelope Cruz). Not to mention some beautiful and breath taking stills of the film in action. More pictures can be seen at comingsoon.net.
It's with this release of promotional stills, a ramping up advertising campaign that might be worry the studio. Can On Stranger Tides (part 4 in the POTC franchise) sustain itself against blockbuster films that'll be released before and after May 20th?
This weekend saw Thor launch with a strong $3.3 million in box-office earnings at midnight screenings and a possible $60-70 million week-end total due to strong performance and word-of-mouth. One has to wonder if POTC 4 will be able to hold off Thor and the following week's The Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2? (Note: It's obviously the summer of sequels) Could the timing have gotten any worse? Either way, looking at past earnings, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (part 2)made over $1.1 billion in gross (released on 7 July 2006) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (part 3) grossed a tad over $300 million (released 25 May 2007).
A big difference wouldn't you say? Mind you, the series has taken a 4 year break, chucked the characters of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan (often debated as lacking in substance) and re-focused on the sure-to-be crazy antics of the one and only Jack Sparrow.
Time will tell if the POTC franchise is still economically profitable and creatively engaging. Here's to hoping audiences show up in the coming weeks.
In case you missed it, here's the latest trailer to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides:
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is directed by Rob Marshall (mostly known for Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha), starring Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane and Penelope Cruz. Written by franchise veterans Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. Will be released on May 20th, 2011 nationwide in 3D, regular 2D and IMAX.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides looks like a vast improvement on the previous films. It is good how they have streamlined the film and reinvented the film series. The previous films were overlong, had too many leads, overloaded with multiple complex storylines and overstuffed with key characters.
This film is centred on Captain Jack Sparrow only who is the sole protagonist in this film and the film follows him. There appears to be only one storyline which is simple and clear. The supporting cast of Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and Geoffrey Rush are the only other key characters.
Pirates of the Carribean 4 is so worth watching!
I loved this!! Not because of the things we should all avoid, but because of the new term you coined: The Bartender Economy. Love, love, love! Why do we go to Naha all the time. Um, great service and the occasional free glass of wine. Businesses should run that way, too. We certainly will!
